MRSA
MRSA is a bacterium that is resistant to common antibiotics like penicillin. It causes painful skin, bloodstream and surgical wound infections and pneumonia. In serious cases it can even cause death.
MRSA infections cause the skin to appear red and inflamed around wound sites. Symptoms may include fever, lethargy and headache.
The majority of MRSA infections occur in hospital environments because of poor sanitation procedures.
Patients in hospitals are most at risk for the following reasons:
- Their pre-existing illnesses make them susceptible to infections
- Their immune system is lowered by treatment
- Their natural body defence systems are weakened as a result of surgical procedures
- They are exposed to large numbers of people.
If you or your loved one has suffered from MRS infection in hospital, you or your loved one may be entitled to claim personal injury compensation.

How does the law protect you?
If you can demonstrate that the spread of MRSA infection was preventable, you may be successful in proving your claim for compensation against the hospital.
You may be able to prove that the hospital was at fault by showing that:
- The hospital had poor infection control procedures in place;
- The hospital admitted you to their ward at a time of an outbreak of MRSA infection without first putting into place appropriate infection control measures;
- The hospital failed to implement infection control measures.
